With this interview, we like to continue our series concerning famous designers of geocoins.

This time it’s all about the creator of popular geocoins such as „Mystic Naga“, „Dragonheart“, „Geocaching Paradise,“ „Mystic Gargoyle“ or „Mystic Pegasus“. Recently there are some new projects like „RG4980“ and the brand new „Mystic Garuda“. The artist became very popular in the meantime – not only in Switzerland but far beyond the borders of his country. Most of you will have probably guessed: It’s about Ivo Henggeler – better known as

„CONIVO – Coins are our passion“

It’s already been a while, that Ivo has agreed to answer a few questions:

To the most geocachers you are well known „only“ as a coindesigner. Would you like to tell us a little about yourself? (Age, profession, family, …)

My name is Ivo Henggeler, I’m currently 44 years old and married to Connie. We have two daughters, Sarina and Jana, aged 13 and 15 years. We’re living just in the heart of Switzerland, where we recently fulfilled our dream of our own house. I am the head chef and responsible for catering in a nursing home.

When and how did you get into geocaching?

Our first cell phone with GPS-capabilty took us the first steps into the game in February 2008. Therefore we chose a traditional cache nearby. I do remember the problems we were facing, because my phone used a different coordinate system than the common for geocaching. Nevertheless we were able to find the cache. I didn’t take long that we bought our first Oregon GPS. Since this time we are known as „Conivo“ (which means nothing else than „Connie and Ivo“).

When and why did you start designing geocoins?

At the early beginning of our geocaching career we visited our first event, the „Zentralschweizer Geocaching Event“. Later that evening I spotted a fine gentleman who was showing and offering curious coins and I was absolutely fascinated by them. Even though I didn’t know the exact greatness of geocoins, I realized very quickly, that I now wanted to collect these things by myself. I bought my first geocoins and they were nice, but with a quite simple shaping and I thought, that this couldn’t be it at all. But due to funding reasons my considerations stopped at this time. One year later – my geocaching acquaintances were increasing significantly – four of us decided to split the financial risk. Now it was possible to create the „Zentralschweizer Geocoin“ and therewith a dream became true. In this group we were able to design an outstanding, detailed geocoin and the feedback throughout the community exceeded our expectations. The first edition was sold out in no time and all our misgivings of a financial fiasco got vanished. I invested the money generated from the sale in my second project, but now without co-workers. This time the response was overwhelming and I had to think about how I would run my future coin business. A short time later, the website www.conivo.ch was online – an elegant way to introduce and offer my actual and upcoming coin projects.

Where do you get your inspirations for your exceptional coins?

That’s the hard part of the process! Inspirations may come from anywhere. There is no specific method to create a coin. Most of them are spontaneous ideas, triggered by an image, a comment from a friend or a specific situation. Sometimes I’m sitting half a year with no ideas for a coin – the next time the complete process and design is finished within a week.

Is there any “message of art” you want to express with your geocoins?

No. My coins don’t have any political, religious or other message. They should be nice and delightful. One important thing is, that the coin should have a round shape. For me they are a part of a treasure. And coins, doubloons or whatever you call them are usually round. You will never find a “Conivo” coin with the shape of a sausage, Mickey Mouse or any other figure.

Do you find it important, that your coins are identified as your creations?

If a coin has made its successful way to the shop, it makes me very proud – like a father is on his little child. So I allow myself to sign all my coins with „created by Conivo Coins“ to characterize them. I’m always very pleased, when people talking about a „Conivo Coin“ and I think that’s legitimate sense. But from the designing perspective I’d like to be free in my ideas and thoughts and so I don’t set the focus on a special element to let people recognize that this coin was made by me.

Is there a crucial moment in the development of a geocoin?

Yes, there is such a moment, but it is always somehow different. It is the moment in which you have the feeling that you know „this is it – this is the way“. It’s the moment when you are willing to take any amount of money to realize the project. Unfortunately you don’t reach this point in every design process.

Since several years, you’re known as coindesigner. How important is this activity for you? Are you an artist in any other way?

Yes I am … actually I’m interested in everything that has to do with inspiration and creativity. I do oil paintings, statues, etc. If something wakes my interest, but I can’t afford it, then I’ll do it by myself. This goes from any kind of art to furniture. My great wish was to become a goldsmith. Unfortunately I had to cancel this wish due to lack of suitable schooling opportunities. With the designing of geocoins I can now do something in this direction.

Some of your coins carry the word „Mystic“ in the name. Do you have a special relationship to mystical things?

This is just a coincidence and came along the way. I think that goes back to the issue of „identification“. It started with the „Mystic Naga“. The single word “Naga” does not sound very well, so I still added the „Mystic“. The „Mystic“ fitted perfectly in the other two coins – the „Mystic Pegasus“ and the “Mystic Gargoyle”- and this is how the story goes.

Most of your designs are not „massive“, but strongly contoured and broken. Is there a special reason? And how do the producers react to your ideas?

There is a little story I can tell you: A time ago time I fiddled about my „Geocaching Paradise Geocoin“, but couldn’t make it to the final design. But then I saw the image of a medallion and this opened my eyes and mind: „Sometimess, less is more!“ and so I left the unnecessary things. In the final analysis this counts for the presence of material as well. The result was a ring with the bird of paradise – plain, simple, and yet like a coin. The community really liked the design and so there was no need to do any changes. I kept this kind of design for further projects and it may be continued in many other coins. The producers first had their problems with my designs. They weren’t able to mint such type of coins, so they decided to use a molding process. The decision was the right one and the result speaks for itself.

Are you doing contract works for other people or are you designing geocoins just for your own purposes?

In proper sense, “Conivo coins” is neither a company nor a similar institution. “Conivo coins” consists of a geocacher (with his pleasure to be creative in his spare time) and a website. Because of that, there will be no regularly publishes of coins from my side. But if I’m in the mood for being creative and I’m satisfied with the design the coin will make it to the start. Nevertheless, I have already accepted orders from colleagues who wanted to have their own “Conivo Coin” designed. Currently I’m working on a design with the theme „meeting friends“ which shall become the official coin for the 2014 Mega-event and until now I’m very pleased looking at the results. Hopefully the producers are able to implement my ideas.

What is – in your opinion – the reason, that collecting geocoins became that popular in the geocaching community?

Collectors (whatever they are collecting) are interested to have as many available versions as possible – a whole set of coins is much more impressive than a single one. Due to the facts, that all geocoins are really versatile and the number of new coin designs is raising very fast, there are always items of interests for the collectors. In addition, coins are nice to see and are made of high quality materials (in most cases). Sometimes I regret, that the geocoins are stored in carrying cases or glass cabinets. It would be advantageous for the game, if the coins would resume their original purpose and travel from cache to cache.

Which kind of “relationship” should geocachers have to their geocoins?

People should have fun and joy with them – both, either the geocacher who finds a coin in a cache and keep it moving or the proud collector of (sometimes really rare) coins.

Are you collecting geocoins of other professional coindesigners?

Of course I do so – seldom the entire series but only the most beautiful. Since the quality of the designs got better over time, I have pieces in my showcase that were some of the most beautiful coins at there time. These days, however, they are only mediocre. If you have a look at coins designed 4 or 5 years ago and compare them with actual mintings you may also think, that the developing is enormous. Designing coins is a huge challenge for us, because no one wants to produce mediocrity.

Ivo – we thank you very much for your sincerity and patience. We can’t wait to see your upcoming designs and masterpieces.
